Reading The Little Prince inspired me to paint this portrait. My love of clowns and puppets gave rise to the ruff around the neck and the pom-pons below it, which together recall that famous, sad clown Pierrot. As the painting progressed, however, my heart felt strongly this had morphed into a self-portrait of my inner child, prompting me to make the eyes green and to evoke my red hair by painting this vulnerable little person with bright pink hair.
