Why It’s So Important to Confirm Your Sun Sign
The Sun’s movement into the signs fluctuates from year to year by anywhere from a few hours to a day or two. So someone born on 24 October one year might be a Scorpio, while someone born that same day during another year might be a Libra.
Here are some notable examples* of how the Sun’s movement from one sign to the next can vary from year to year:
✦Comedian and political critic Bill Maher, born 20 January 1956, is an Aquarius, while violinist and conductor Uto Ughi, born 21 January 1944, is a Capricorn—the sign that comes before Aquarius—despite being born a day after Maher.
✦Sculptor Daniel Chester French (born 1850) was born 20 April and had the Sun in Aries, yet artists Joan Miro (born 1893) and Odilon Redon (born 1840) were born the same day but were Tauruses.
For someone born on a day the Sun changed signs, an accurate birth time is needed to verify that person’s Sun sign. For example, actor Lee Marvin was born 19 February 1924 in New York City. On that day, the Sun moved out of Aquarius and into Pisces at 4:51 p.m. (New York time). Without the exact time of Marvin’s birth, we do not know for certain whether he was an Aquarius or a Pisces.

Other Astrology Services: Online Reports to Interpret Your Birth Chart
Once you have your birth chart, you may be interested in getting more information by having the chart interpreted. You can select from three inexpensive interpretive reports:
These dates are only approximate, however, because the Sun’s movement into the signs varies every year. So if you were born within two days of the start date of a particular Sun sign, it’s a good idea to obtain a copy of your astrological birth chart to confirm which sign the Sun actually occupied when you were born.
You can get a free copy of your birth chart if you have the exact date, time, and place of your birth. Go to our birth chart calculator now to get yours.
After you supply your information, a page displaying your birth (or “natal”) chart will appear and will look similar to this birth chart calculated for social work leader Jane Addams:

Within Addams’s chart, find the circle with a dot in it (the astrological symbol for the Sun), which appears toward the left. As you can see, her Sun is in the sign of Virgo, which looks like an M with a loop on the right side.
Now do the same for your own chart. Use the tables below to see which sign the Sun occupies in your chart; you also can use them to see what signs the other planets occupied when you were born.

Also, be sure to visit our archives, where you’ll find special issues devoted to every sign of the zodiac. Besides reviewing each sign from a spiritual and mystical perspective, archived issues present paintings and photography chosen specifically to harmonize with the month’s astrological sign or season as well as an inspiring guided meditation. Throughout each year, you can use these newsletters to “follow the Sun” and make the most of whatever sign the Sun currently occupies.
Current Planet Positions
You also might find it helpful to know where the planets are at this moment so you can compare these transiting positions (or “transits”) to the positions in your birth chart.
For example, if a given planet below is in the same sign and degree as a planet in your birth chart, then the energy of the transiting planet will create a powerful effect by combining its energies with those of the birth planet.
