William S. Bike
Political punditry
As political commentators, Senior Vice President William S. Bike and his associate, Gail Mansfield, President of the ProseProse public relations firm, provide a progressive viewpoint--with an edge.
Many progressives and liberals in the last 25 years have become whiny wimps. That’s not how Bike and Mansfield operate. They’re outspoken, “give ‘em hell” progressives in the mode of the straight-shooters of history: Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Mike Royko, Eleanor Roosevelt, Studs Terkel.

Mansfield comes from the rough-and-tumble world of community journalism--a tough street reporter who can see when the little guy is being screwed and isn’t afraid to write about it. She isn’t afraid to tell off a source or ask hard questions--which has resulted in several journalism awards.Bike also has a background in journalism--and in community and political activism as well. He literally wrote the book on politics: Winning Political Campaigns, a how-to handbook on political campaigning. Politicalbook-reviews.com said, “From a practical, political operations standpoint, it is the best book out--yet.”
They’re as comfortable in front of a microphone as they are in their own living rooms. Mansfield, a former PR wiz, has more than ten years of experience in speaking in public. James A. Cox, a producer and host for WYOU-TV in Madison, WI, says that in a broadcast setting, “Bill Bike is articulate, knowledgeable, personable, and professional.”Bike, who holds a B.A. in political science from DePaul University, has been a journalist since 1979.
Bike has covered politics and written scores of editorials for the Gazette, a community newspaper published near downtown Chicago, since 1983, and also has written on politics for several national publications. Author of three books, he also was communications chair of the political organization Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century from 1997.
To promote his three books, he has made frequent radio and television appearances, with 17 radio appearances around the United States in 2002 alone, discussing such subjects as how to get elected, the silliest things politicians have done, Watergate, and the 2004 Democratic presidental hopefuls. Mansfield holds a B.A. in English from Rockford College, Rockford, IL, and has done graduate coursework in American history at Loyola University Chicago. She's been a journalist since 1986.
A political and public policy reporter and editorial writer for the Gazette, she has written and been an editor for nationally distributed publications. She has won 13 journalism awards, including ten international Apex Awards, and a Peter Lisagor Award, the highest honor in Chicago journalism. She has appeared on regional and national radio discussing presidential history and campaign issues.
Together, Bike and Mansfield provide a unique, energetic brand of commentary welcomed by radio producers around the country.
